There is so much conflicting information out there these days about what we should be eating and there are more fad diets than you could possibly keep up with. We are constantly being bombarded with the “diet of the week” encouraging us to eat this and not that, increase this and avoid that . . . The information is so contradictory and confusing, it is no wonder that so many people are feeling frustrating and discouraged.

While many “diets” do lead to short term results and varying amounts of weight loss, the truth is, they are usually highly unsustainable and often lead to increased weight gain once a person goes off of them and begins their old eating patterns again. So if dieting is not the answer, what is the secret to healthy living and maintaining a desired weight? The secret – are you ready for it?!? JUST EAT REAL FOOD!!

Over the last number of years, we have gotten so far away from eating real, whole foods that some of the things we are consuming are not even close to their original form. So many of our foods are so heavily processed and refined that they don’t even resemble their starting point. Sadly, many school children don’t even recognize many regular vegetables as they don’t get the chance to eat them in their pure form.

As we have gotten busier and busier as a society layering on more and more responsibilities on ourselves and more activities on our kids, we don’t have the time to prepare healthy, wholesome foods for our families and we are often guilty of the old “grab & go” where we pick up something from a drive through or dump something out of a box in to the microwave so that we can gobble it down and get on to our next event or activity.

So, truth be told, if we want to be healthy and we want to maintain a body weight that is comfortable for us, we need to slow down and make the time to dial things back and start to make meal prepping an important part of our weekly schedule so we have the foods ready ahead of time so that we can make the best choices possible even when time is an issue. If this sounds like just one more thing you don’t have time for, consider that it is an investment in your health and that of your family and that there are many ways that you can still make quick and easy meals that contain the nutrients that your body needs. We think nothing of spending 15 minutes a day waiting in a coffee shop drive through for our daily cup of coffee but yet we feel we have no time to meal prep or engage in other activities that will actually contribute to our health and wellness. It is often just about setting our priorities and reorganizing some of our time to make a choice that will affect our health and well-being.
