Finding Your Way Back on Track

By Jen Gendron: Health & Wellness Coach

Feeling so far off-track you have no idea how to get back on?!? You are not alone!  These last six months have wreaked havoc on the physical & mental health of many of us. Going from months of isolation to gradually emerging from our little cocoons has been tough and, trying to adjust to the strange new world we find ourselves living in is even tougher! Many of us have spent this time comforting ourselves with foods & beverages that are not the best choices and have also significantly reduced our activity levels. I have been open about the struggles that I have been facing & just how far off track I ended up. High levels of stress have contributed to taking many of us down a path of bad choices & feelings of being out of control. While many of us initially thought that we were facing a very temporary situation and decided that we would just get back on track when things “return to normal”, as we enter the sixth month of our “new normal” it is time to ditch this notion & begin to pull ourselves up out of the funk & start to work our way back!

In order to do this, we need to remember that we didn’t get here over night and we can’t expect to pick up where we left off. We need to be kind to ourselves and take things one step in a time. The first step is to get ourselves in the right mindset and this can be one of the toughest parts of all. Begin with setting a small goal for yourself & try to focus on one thing at a time. If you haven’t been exercising at all, start with a goal of moving your body for 15 minutes a day & working up from there. If you haven’t been paying attention to what you are putting into your mouth, begin by changing one small habit at a time. Focus on cutting out the junk food or skipping the evening snack if it has crept into your daily habits. If you are feeling stressed & overwhelmed, find small ways to start incorporating some “you” time into your day. Give up things that cause you stress like watching the news every day & fixating on the things going on around us that we can’t control. Find ways to turn off & unplug, reconnect with nature, get outside and enjoy fresh air & sunshine.

While I know these times we are living in can feel scary and uncertain, and there are many things going on around us that we can’t control, there is one thing we do have control over, and that is how we take care of our physical, mental & spiritual health.

Now more than ever it is important for us to be focusing on keeping ourselves healthy, our immune systems strong & our body well rested and able to ward off illness. There is no time like the present to begin taking care of YOU! You are worth it & taking care of you should be your number one priority.
