Start Where You Are

By Jennifer Gendron, PTS/FIS, Health & Wellness Coach

We all find ourselves from time to time stuck in a rut and unable to get out of our own way. Sometimes, we think that even though we would like to start to live a healthier lifestyle by changing our nutrition habits, losing some excess weight, getting more physically active or by making any other changes that we feel are needed, we just don’t have the energy/strength/willpower to get there. I know this feeling and have been there more times than I like to admit. Let’s face it, taking the first step on a new journey is hard but, if we never take it, we will never be able to get started and our destination will never be reached. So, what is standing in your way? Chances are, it is YOU. We can always find an endless array of excuses for why we can’t take the time to get started – we are too busy, the kids’ activities don’t allow us any time for ourselves, we work full time, we will wait until the time is right etc., etc., etc. The truth is, there will always be a reason why we “can’t” right now but let’s start to think about reasons why we CAN!

There is no time like the present to take that first step on the journey to a healthier you, but you must remember to be gentle with yourself and start where you are. In order to achieve success, be sure to set reasonable goals for yourself and accept that your starting place may be different than that of others around you. That you may have to start and restart many times before you actually get there. I don’t know how many times I have hard women say things like, “I would like to join the gym, but first I have to lose 10 lbs”, “I would like to take that class but I have to get in better shape first” and many other statements like these that block our path to success before we even get started. We begin with the mindset that we are not good enough right now, that some how we have to better ourselves before we are even able to get started. In fact, the opposite is true. You are right where you are supposed to be right now and there is no better time to make that first step on the road to a healthier you. In order to get there, start with your mindset first. What is that negative little voice telling you about why it is not the right time for you to get started? Stop and take the time to listen to that voice and then slowly begin to change it.

You deserve to be able to take the time to care for yourself and there is no time like the present to begin. So take a few minutes today to think about where you are right now and to be grateful for this starting point. Be grateful that you have a body that is able to move, a mind that is able to think and the inner strength that you need to take the first step on whatever journey you desire.
