Staying Active During the Colder Winter Months

As the weather begins to turn cold, it becomes less desirable to get outside for our physical activity.  The month of November can be especially difficult since it is too early to typically have snow and enjoy all of the outdoor activities that come along with the white stuff, so it can be a long and dreary month as we wait for snowfall and look for other ways to keep active  while staying warm.

This can be a great time to take advantage of trying something new.  Why not take that class you have been thinking about or join an indoor walking group at a local track or gym?  There are a number of great activities that can not only keep you active, but will also boost your spirit during the cold and dreary days of November.  Zumba can be a great way to dance your cares away while getting a great workout!  If you have not tried this dance-based fitness class set to Latin music, you really should check it out!  Other classes such as cardio tone, group cycling and interval training can give you a great cardio boost if you are not able to get outside to walk, run or ride your bike when the colder weather hits.  Themed cycling classes set to video can be challenging and fun with a change of scenery with every class.  Experience the Tour de France or a ride through the Alps without ever leaving the studio!  Classes such as Body Sculpt or Power Pump will give your muscles a workout when your outdoor work is done.  Strength training should be performed two to three times per week in order to maintain a strong and healthy body and if you are not someone who enjoys pumping iron in the gym, a class is a great way to get this part of your fitness program in.

If you are finding yourself drained as we move in to the season of shorter days and less sunshine, a gentle yoga class can be an invigorating way to rejuvenate mind and body.  Classes are available for all fitness levels from many locations including gyms, studios and private centres.

No matter which fitness activities you chose, make sure to verify that the fitness professional leading the class or program in which you are participating is fully certified and up to date with their qualifications so you can ensure you are received quality instruction that is safe and takes in to account your personal needs.
